Detransitioner lawsuits refer to legal actions initiated by individuals who have undergone gender transition treatments (such as hormone therapy or surgeries) and later decided to detransition, seeking to revert to their original gender presentation. These individuals may pursue legal action against medical providers, health organizations, or other entities, alleging that they were not given adequate information about the risks and potential outcomes of transition treatments, were not properly screened for mental health issues or alternative treatments, or received negligent care.
These lawsuits often center on claims of medical malpractice, lack of informed consent, or failure to adhere to proper standards of care. The individuals who file such lawsuits might argue that they were too young to make such significant decisions, that alternative treatments for their gender dysphoria were not explored, or that the medical and psychological support they received was inadequate for their needs.
In addition, Grand View Research predicts the U.S. sex reassignment surgery market size will reach $5 billion by 2030, up from $2.5 billion today. This growth can attract bad actors within the medical profession and lead to coercive diagnosis.
In 2022, Reuters collaborated with Komodo Health Inc, a health technology firm, to determine the number of young individuals seeking and receiving this type of medical treatment. This data reveals an increasing trend of families nationwide wrestling with significant decisions regarding the best options for their children. Unfortunately, too many of those patients never should have undergone these kinds of irreversible treatments.
